Scoliosis is a medical condition that presents as an abnormal curve of the spine. It is occasionally seen in children with cerebral palsy, spinal muscle atrophy or following trauma. It may be present at birth or occur at a later onset. When the curvature progresses it requires some from of intervention. This condition is followed by orthopedists and referrals may be made to physical therapists for exercise management.

A common form of scoliosis is known as the Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. This type of scoliosis has no known etiology and typically affects children between the ages of 10 and 18 years old. A specialized form of physical therapy known as the Schroth Method may be effective in stabilizing and improving the child's curve.
